Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano

 

This obelisk, one of the largest in the world, once stood in Thebes, Egypt.  It is now in the square adjacent to the Basilica.

 

The Basilica of Saint John

 

This church was first built in 314 by Constantine.  It has been rebuilt a number of times since then.  The present  facade of Christ and the Apostles is by Alessandro Galilei.  The interior is attributed to Borromini.

 

The Basilica of Saint John is the cathedral church of Rome.  It is the Pope's church as he is the official Bishop of Rome.

 

 

 

 

 

It is "Festival of the people of the World" day at the Basilica.
