Sepino was built in Samnitic times (the Samnites were one of the prehistoric italic tribes).  It expanded in Roman times in the late fourth century BC when the Romans attacked and secured the area.  The wall, towers and gates that now remain were begun in the emperor Augustan age.

 

 

First century AD tomb with inscription: Publius Numisius Ligure, tribune of the soldiers of the third legion of Augustus, prefect of military 15 times, head of police three times and patron of the town.  Erected by his father at his own expense at the death of his son.
