Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is a covered arcade named after the first king of the united Italy.  It was completed in 1877.  The Galleria is covered by a glass roof with its central space covered by a glass dome.  It is located adjacent to the Duomo.

This is my favorite architectural spot in Milan.

Duomo di Milano

The Duomo di Milano is an exceptionally large Gothic cathedral in the main square of Milan.  It is one of the most famous buildings in Europe and is also the largest Gothic cathedral and the second largest Catholic cathedral in the world.  It measures 157 meters long.

Construction of the Duomo di Milano started in 1386, by the archbishop Antonio da Saluzzo, on the site of the former cathedral Santa Maria Maggiore.  The main spire, built in 1769, is 109 meters high and has on top a golden laminated statue of the Madonna.

CimiteroMonumentale

The Milan Monumental Cemetery was opened in 1866.  This very unique cemetery shows graves of different cults and religions and including sections for non-Catholics and Jews.  The graves yield an artistic museum that provide a representation of the deceased combined with the history of Milan.

This site is not to be missed in a visit to Milan.

Castello Sforzesco

Castello Sforzesco is a castle that was the residence of the ruling Sforzesco family of Milan, it now houses several art collections.  The original construction on the site began in the 14th century.  The castle was severely damaged as a result of the allied bombardment of Milan in World War II.

The original city of Milan was named Mediolanum.  It was conquered in 222 BC by the Romans.
