Congress Avenue Bridge
State Capitol In the Background
The Congress Avenue Bridge spans the Colorado River and is the gateway to downtown Austin. It has well-used bike/walk paths on both sides of the bridge.
One amazing fact about the Congress Avenue Bridge is that at night a very large bat colony emerges from under the bridge. This large colony of bats is due to the favorable conditions of the area and the 1980's bridge design with cubic spaces under the bridge surface that the bats prefer for roosting. One wonders if civil engineers have avoided this design ever since? Nonetheless, the emerging bats put on a very impressive show that can last for one half hour after dusk.
